I met my mom and brother in the Capitol a few weeks ago. We spent three days in the outskirts of the city, a short walk from a stop on the Silver Line. I was nerding out about the Metro for a number of reasons:
- I was in the middle of rewatching season two of House of Cards, where a pivotal scene takes place in the Metro, and
- The Metro stations are so beautifully designed and maintained. I am used to the MBTA, and while it is what allows me to get to and from work every day, it is the oldest (fact) and wonkiest (opinion) of all underground transit systems in the U.S.
We spent one afternoon walking along the National Mall and seeing most of the memorials– I’m used to lots of walking but after that day I was completely pooped. I was most impressed at the Lincoln memorial. I had never walked all the way around it, and I’m glad I did this time. The sun was just setting, casting gorgeous golden light on everyone walking along the two shorter sides. College students were studying on the back steps. I even saw a couple picnicking in the shadow of one of the pillars.
It was so, so nice to see my family. I’ve lived out of reach from most of them for close to two years now,
