Best of 2016

1 January 2017

A collage of instant photos on a grey background. The U.S. flag is visible in many of them, it was hung on the wall.

New Year’s Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the past, plan for the future, and nurse the worst hangover of the year. Thinking back on the last twelve months turned out to be a bit overwhelming– 2016 brought a lot of fun, a lot of change, and a lot of growth. My life now is wildly different from what it was at this time last year– I live in a different part of the country, I no longer work full-time at a retail job, I am back in school pursuing a degree, and I have a body of work to look back on for this past year, showing a refinement of my style and vxpression of my passion. These are a few of my favorite photos from 2016.

Small band Lemolo performing in a Mission Hill basement.

I lived by the “work hard, play hard” mentality in early 2016. I worked more than forty hours aSnowy LL Bean boots in sharp focus on a floating dock in Portland Maine. week at a retail tech firm in the heart of Boston at the time, usually with days off between the weekends. This allowed me to travel during off-peak times and avoid tourist traffic in Portland, ME and the White Mountains. My trips were innumerable– I remember taking every chance to head up north and hike through the mountains in Franconia and Lincoln and visit small shops in Portland. I also made an effort to see live shows and small artists. Above is a snap I took of Lemolo during a basement show in Mission Hill, a neighborhood just south of Back Bay in Boston.

In addition to personal projects like building my portfolio, I took on my first high-profile wedding Bridge and groom kiss during their first look in Copley Square on a cold Boston morning.in March. I second shot for my friend Leighanne and captured the groom’s preparations. Shortly afterwards, Leighanne invited me on a promotional shoot for our friend Danielle’s music duo,
Ark. We had a lot of fun taking advantage of the unique architecture and displays at the ICA in Boston’s seaport district. The tail end of winter and beginning of spring brought more opportunities for trips up to the mountains, including a week-long adventure to Lake Willoughby in Vermont, home to Mount Pisgah.

I visited Los Angeles shortly before my move to North Carolina to photograph my friend Rebecca among other things. It was my first time visiting California and I had a blast! I am hoping to head back that way in the near future. During my last few weeks in Boston I also shot promotional photos for Dylan‘s website as well as portraits for my friend Edgar.

After moving down south, starting school again as a full-time student, and keeping a part-time job, I continued to make time for photography. Reconnecting with old friends like MaryRobert made for some sweet moments and killer photos. I am excited to see what adventures and opportunities 2017 holds for me.
